The annual WinS Symposium recognized contributions of female scientists to research at UNC and beyond.
WinS organizes an annual symposium to bring together female researchers across UNC in an event that uniquely recognizes their contributions.
This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Kathie L. Olsen, a neuroscientist noted for her work in science policy. Previously, Dr. Olsen was the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Chief Scientist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
As a vocal advocate for women in science, Dr. Olsen shared her triumphs and setbacks in her keynote address. Among her priorities were grants for both individual female investigators at critical points in their careers and institution-level projects designed to lower gender barriers in science. Both initiatives drew fierce criticism from opponents of affirmative action and funding uncertainty. On a personal level, Dr. Olsen confessed to experiencing imposter syndrome, especially at NASA where she was keenly aware she was seldom the expert in the room. But her humility won her allies.
Dr. Olsen had an opportunity to interact with her audience at the poster session, where female graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from a variety of disciplines presented their research. Graduate student Lauren Donoghue and postdoctoral fellow Teresa Bonello won first place in their respective categories. Graduate student Catherine Pitman and postdoctoral fellow Miranda Carper were the runner ups. Poster winners accompanied Dr. Olsen to lunch. "The future is brighter because of these dedicated young women," said Dr. Olsen.
